BEING A STARTUP IN NIGERIA IS SO TOUGH BECAUSE…

One of my protégées came visiting yesterday and gave me a ‘seed’. I was humbled. He was someone who had tried to engage my attention for so many months and I did not know until sometime last year when someone sent me a DM on IG asking to join my BSG community. But because he could not afford it, he chose to ‘pay a fee just to learn from me from a distance’. I had never heard such kind of perspective. That was how he got my attention.

It’s been a year or so of our relationship and yesterday, he came to my office. As we spoke, I learnt new things about him that humbled me. Then he mentioned his struggle with entrepreneurship. As a startup, he has come to a point where he felt perhaps he should get a job. He loves entrepreneurship but the realities of entrepreneurship is killing his possibility mindset and his abundance mindset. These were his words. I FELT FOR HIM.

Reminds me of another friend-client who, as at January this year, was so neck deep in challenges of debts for her startup and also had challenges with staffing. The staff just never seemed to ‘click’. These are painful issues for a passionate entrepreneur.

Who is a startup?

A startup is any small business that solves a human problem with the possibility of becoming a scalable business.

Estimated data shows that “Nigeria has the highest volume of start-ups in Africa — over 750. South Africa comes second, but its startups raised $241 million raised in 2020, compared to Nigeria’s $64.1 million.” (Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/qz.com/africa/2012780/nigeria-ranks-first-in-african-startups-but-faces-challenges/amp/)

So you see from the reference that NIGERIA HAS THE LARGEST STARTUP POOL IN AFRICA BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO MONEY.

I have been a startup since 2010 and I have worked with so many startups. These are the problems I have observed:

  1. Finding a Paying Market Share.
  2. Raising Money to sustain day-to-day business.
  3. Building a team that will stay.
