(Fairly Long Read but Worth It)

Last Thursday, I had a 90-minute session with a client who took advantage of the subsidized offers I made at February SOPE. It was riveting. He needed help to design a lean structure that could operate his business that is 90% online and 10% offline inventory. It was a lightbulb 💡 session. When we finished, he said “I think I need personal coaching. Do you do personal coaching?”

I was bemused. Then I asked “how did you know about me/us (Cerca Africa)?” He said someone who follows me on LinkedIn strongly recommended me to him. The name of the referrer still does not ring a bell for me but I’m flattered.

I then broke down the stages of my coaching… as follows:

  1. I am PRIMARILY a LIFE COACH. The meaning of Life Coaching is someone who has TOOLS to help you NAVIGATE the journey from WHERE YOU ARE to WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. That’s the sum total of Life Coaching. I have seen many online comments like “how can someone be so arrogant to say you are a “life” coach? You mean you know so much about life that you can coach a person about life?” Some even query that “young people are too inexperienced to be life coaches”. No ! That’s not the reality of the practice. We DO NOT RELY on life experiences to be life coaches. We are equipped with tools and methods (like thorough questioning skills) to GUIDE you towards your goals and ambitions. In fact, YOU ARE THE PERSON TO DO THE WORK. We are ONLY FACILITATORS of that work. So, ANYONE (and EVERYONE) can be a Life Coach.
  2. Because I am passionate about Business, my natural constituency is BUSINESS OWNERS. Everything I say and do SCREAMS “Business” and so, naturally, Founders and CEOs are drawn to me. My study, learning, appetite, consumption, commitment, investments, et al are within business contexts hence my depth and efficiency when it comes to DOING and TALKING ABOUT Business. This is why BUSINESS COACHING is one of my CORE NICHES. I have built businesses. I have invested in businesses and I have managed businesses. In fact, because I admire OPERATIONS a lot, I know so much about the DAY TO DAY of businesses across many sectors. To add to that, being a YouWiN Mentor and Monitor exposed me to A LOT of OPERATIONS and STRATEGY GAPS further adding to my expertise for business coaching.
  3. Now, the main PROBLEM with Business is usually THE OWNER OF THE BUSINESS. Many business owners RESIST the reality that they have VICES. All Founders have vices and these vices PLACE A LID TO THE GROWTH OF THEIR BUSINESS. A Founder needs healing from their upbringing, their relationship with money, their understanding of leadership, their capacity for pressure, their fear of influence, their difficulty to speak in public, their phobia for debt, and so many more. THIS IS WHERE EXECUTIVE COACHING COMES IN. As someone who has combined skills from Neuroscience (Emotional Intelligence, Anger Management, Neuro-Linguistics Programming NLP, Hypnosis, Mental Health First Aid, and so many tools from psychology); I have immense capacity to undertake THE INNER WORK with a Founder; helping them acknowledge their vices, embracing that it’s part of their humanity and then charting a course towards mastering the vices.
