I was driving into my estate and he opened the gate. Gentleman and easygoing. I stopped to ask his name. “My name is Sam” (not real name), he answered. You’re new? “Yes”, he answered again. Welcome! “Thank you, Sir,”, he replied. Coincidentally, he was the same person who brought the notice to the estate meeting to my house and I received it myself so I probed a bit more. ‘Did you go to school?’; he answered with ‘I am a graduate of XXXX’. 😳 Graduate????? Then he talked about being a self-sponsored graduate. He comes from a very humble background and he singlehandedly sponsored his education. He is grateful to, at least, secure a job as our estate security.
THIS STORY IS NOT ENTIRELY INSPIRING. And there are so many people around us who are at this level. My housekeeper is currently attending a tertiary school along Kaduna-Nassarawa axis (North-Central Nigeria) and it is self-sponsored too. She comes home on break, works, earns her wages and leaves for school upon resumption. Sorts herself through school.
See ehn, if you had a parent, guardian, or any sponsor who spent any amount to support your schooling and education, PLEASE FIND A MEANS TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE. It is a major milestone covered for you.
And to add to that, if you have enjoyed a semblance of ‘privileges’ growing up, YOU ARE AMONG A POSSIBLE 0.5% to 1% OF THE BLESSED ONES. The chances of people who enjoyed privileged upbringing to fare better in their later life is so high, irrespective of the situations around the economy. Those who literally ‘prayed’ and ‘fasted’ to get their next meal have to virtually fight their way to the top. IT LOOKS LIKE ONE (1) OUT OF TEN (10) OF SUCH PEOPLE GET TO BREAK OUT OF THE LOWER RUNG OF THE LADDER. It is quite disheartening.
In this post, I want to admonish as follows:
I hope this helps.
