UNCONVENTIONAL BUSINESS IDEAS

When Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook, if you had joined at the beginning in 2004-2007, it was super boring. I recall using so many hours to upload the list of my favorite books that I have read (Facebook helped you keep an e-library), family tree, favorite music and favorite movies, etc

When Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook, if you had joined at the beginning in 2004-2007, it was super boring. I recall using so many hours to upload the list of my favorite books that I have read (Facebook helped you keep an e-library), family tree, favorite music, and favorite movies, etc. Over the last 17 years, he has made a lot of innovations around Facebook, acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp, cloning Snapchat and Zoom, etc. Then he went ahead to start acquiring several other apps. Each of these apps was boring in their own rights too but Mark did something revolutionary.

He created a sync of all these apps. He created what he called STORY. Now, we have IG story, Facebook story and WhatsApp story. Guess what happened to these channels?

More than 60% increase in cross-subscriptions across all 3 apps. People who ordinarily were not on Instagram joined Instagram because Facebook story asked them if they’d love to. And vice versa. Now, even WhatsApp has a status where you can view subscribers’ activities and other incentives.

How does this affect you?

You see, sometimes you must do what is almost instantly outside your core just to complement your core. Mark did not need Instagram or WhatsApp ordinarily because Facebook was an instant hit and very popular all by itself but he didn’t think so. He acquired a boring app, overhauled it and created a connection to the main app (Facebook) hence enhancing Facebook. That was ingenious.

At a point, Facebook had email addresses ‘samobafemi@facebook.com’ but when it was cumbersome to manage, Facebook dropped it altogether. What does that tell you? Sometimes, a popular conventional framework can be more overhead than a reprieve for your business.

Virtually every quarter since SOBCA was registered in August 2016, we have created one form of innovation or the other to reinforce our main core. We have created hashtag campaigns, developed song contests, video pitch contests, twitter RT contests and ultimately, KIDS CARTOON products. Ordinarily, we have no business doing these activities but the overall benefit for us has been that we have trended on social media, we have become very popular and a household name for mental and emotional health, etc.

This ‘unconventional’ methods can be very magical for your business.

WHAT IS ONE UNCONVENTIONAL or WILD IDEA YOU CAN INJECT INTO YOUR BUSINESS THIS WEEK, ESPECIALLY AT ALMOST ZERO COST?
