WHAT YOU SHOULD DO WITH THE TIGHTENING ECONOMY.

No matter how proofed you may have been over the years, the impact of the Buhari-Emefiele economy is beginning to tell at levels that cannot be ignored. Let’s face the fact: THE ECONOMY IS SHRINKING IN MORE WAYS THAN ECONOMISTS TELL US. Majority are feeling it now.

So earlier today, I was self-discussing (a self discussion is a style of meditation, in case you want a more common word 😁) and I traced some actions I have taken so far in the past 4 years, which have helped me keep afloat and in-demand. These strategies may help you and of course, you can build on them. They are:

1. I narrowed deeper into my skill base. In other words, I became better at what I do. You can read this as: LEARN (ACQUIRE) A NEW “STRONG” SKILL. Prior to 2018, I was more of a Neuroscientist and Life Coach who had talent with managing businesses. But within 4 years, I have fortified (insured) my future by acquiring new degrees that I can take to the Bank. WHEN THE ECONOMY IS SHRINKING, INVEST YOUR ‘LAST CASH’ TO GET A VERY STRONG SET OF NEW SKILLS. This is why you must not joke with SOBCA Certifications in 2022 or BSG Strategy Course. These skills are BANKABLE!!!
2. I cut down my team size. I have always believed in a lean team. Anyone around me knows I don’t hire heavy. But now, I don’t even just hire for organogram roles. I hire STRICTLY FOR FUNCTION. If you are not doing what I am paying you for, I release you IMMEDIATELY. This comes with a lot of emotional stress but I have been proven right time and again. When I saw the news about Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg letting go staff, I smiled. I WAS RIGHT AFTER ALL. Function generates revenue. Dysfunction spends constrained revenue. Check your team and do right by it.
3. I started doing more ‘heart’ things than ‘head’ things. The relationship I have built with my daughters, protégés, staff, friends and anyone within my caucus has become MORE REAL. I have been more into friendships and socializing this year than I have done in probably all my years. There is something about my new commitment to humanity that has helped me cope with Nigeria and the world. For example, I have attended more weddings in 2022 than I have attended in 43 years. Even I cannot stop smiling at the ‘new me’. 😊 When the economy is being bitchy, find the people whom you think matter and bond more with them. The oxytocin your body releases from this is such a healer.
