WHY MY FORMER BUSINESS FAILED!!!

5 years ago, after I ran BARNABAS HOUSE for 5 years, struggling, we founded SAM OBAFEMI BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE ACADEMY (SOBCA).

There were 3 factors that made Barnabas House (@BHouseNG) to fail…

1. Most of our target customers saw the business as a MINISTRY. Because it is ‘Barnabas’, they assumed it was a church ministry so most of our prospecting was ignored or taken for church promotions.
2. We did not operate a NICHE MARKET. We were just like any Management Consulting firm. No special services or niches. Even though we were known for Emotional Intelligence and Anger Management, our ‘ministry-consulting’ toga did not help.
3. I was ‘too selfless than maverick’. Because I am a chronic giver, I was naive. I did not know the difference between business and philanthropy. Worse still, this made the ‘ministry’ label on Barnabas House more pronounced.

In 2016, I learnt the hard lessons as follows:

1. Be kind about your service but firm about your business. Do not apologize to anyone for demanding for the value for your service. Many customers do not mind withholding your money ‘forever’ but you must practice how to get your money for services you have rendered.
2. We niched DEEPER. We are the only brand in the world that has combined Mental Health curriculum in a wilder spectrum than any organization. This profoundly reinforced our brand equity.
3. We were ‘fortunate’ with our corporate governance implementation. We have a very supportive board; we have the best team in the world; we have a very restless President (Coach Sam) you know and we enjoy goodwill from being a ‘generous’ firm.
