HOW I BECAME A MARKETING MAESTRO.

I have shared this story so many times and I will always do. In 2006, I saw a vacancy post in YahooJobs for Network Administrator. I was in Lagos. The job was on Marina, Lagos. I applied and was invited for an interview. When I got to the interview, the MD was the interviewer. He asked me questions around computer networks and other technical areas. Then, out of a sudden swipe, he asked ‘if we want you to market our products…’; I suddenly interrupted him and replied ‘I hate marketing’. He replied ‘no. That’s fine. I was just asking’. I was offered the job, a N54,000 job, but I declined because I was afraid he would ‘force’ me to market when I resumed at the job.

I always remember that moment. Because, here I am 15 years later, practically a living, breathing marketer.

This week, I spent time traveling backwards and I asked myself WHAT DID I DO AND WHAT DO I DO THAT MAKES MARKETING SECOND NATURE TO ME?
