The Secret to building a strong community or a strong employee base or anything that requires many people to build together; is to BUILD A LONG LIST OF ACTIONABLE BENEFITS THEY WILL ENJOY, progressively, in incremental degrees and by improved commitments.
If you want a community that will grow stronger, try to consider the following secrets:
1. What will success mean for the community? What would need to happen for us to measure that the community is serving its purpose. For me, my measure of OSP for example, is every time someone gets hired and paid for any engagement we share within the community. Also, how many people enjoy ‘open doors’ because they are members of “ Sam Obafemi’s “ OSP Community? Lastly, how many people are able to move from ‘invisible’ to ‘attractive and visible’ in their craft? That is the very key cardinal of this community.
2. What Activities or Events or Opportunities will make these measures of success in (1) above doable? What are the linkages and routine activities that MUST happen so that, over time, we hit the goals? How adaptable and flexible are these activities?
3. What are the DEMOGRAPHICS of the individuals we are attracting to the community? What kind of engagement activities will keep them RETAINED within the community? What should we do for Members to keep them engaged and retained? What will make the Members say ‘I’d rather stay here!!!’
4. What is the money-making model in and of the community? What activities and strategies can be designed to help members make money and also help the community founders make money? How can the community become a money making engine room?
5. Aside money, how many ROIs can we generate for everyone inside the community? In how many ways can Members enjoy RETURNS of being in the community?
If you dwell long enough and think deep enough, consistently, you’d build something very strong and very scalable with your community.
Lest I forget, building a community is a long, hard job and many times, can be a thankless job … but the pros outweigh the cons. I am an advocate for community building, 24/7, 365 days… for life.
